Abstract:
»This chapter examines gendered violence in the ghettos and camps under the control of Nazis and their collaborators during the Holocaust in Eastern Europe. It focuses on ghettos and camps in Latvia, Lithuania, and Romanian-controlled Transnistria, a part of occupied Ukraine. We discuss sexual violence, including the rape of Jewish and Roma girls and women, but expand the definition of gendered violence to encompass coercive phenomena that targeted prisoners both as members of targeted ethnic groups and as women. The purpose of this chapter is to construct a narrative, using women’s experiences as witnesses, victims, resistors, and survivors that may be obscured in accounts that universalize the violent and deadly experiences of the ghettos and camps during a genocide. We highlight the spectrum of gendered violence, including sexual violence and bodily humiliation, coerced abortions and sterilization, and child killing. The chapter asks: What do Jewish and Romani survivor and witness accounts tell us about women’s experiences in ghettos and camps in the Baltics and Transnistria? How is gendered violence remembered and recounted in survivor accounts? What do women’s accounts and experiences of imprisonment and violence contribute to our historical understanding of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe?«
